Barberries have a beautiful, vibrant red color and a very distinctive, tart and sour taste that you just cant get enough of. In the past, before citrus was widely available, barberries were used in very much the same way. High in vitamins B and C, they have been used medicinally for centuries to treat gastric aches and to boost liver function.

The country in which they are used the most is Iran, where they are referred to as zereshk (زرشک.) The berries are common in Persian cuisine such as in rice pilafs (known as zereshk polo) and as a flavoring for meat stews.
